piloto pardo is pleased to present Roulette, a group exhibition celebrating the gallery’s new space in Farringdon, London. The exhibition presents twenty-nine works placed in close proximity and in a semi-circular form, so as to borrow from the game of chance. The “compartments” are, in this case, artworks from artists who have collaborated with piloto pardo in the past, will feature in its upcoming program, and a few special additions, such as a historic work of Henri Cartier-Bresson.
According to Roger Caillois’ critique of Homo Ludens, “Alea” is the category of games in which the player is subjected or favoured by luck. With the works hung in close alignment, visitors are invited to “place a bet” on a piece, reflecting on their own sense of speculation, interests, taste, and other criteria in the context of an emerging cultural space, an endeavor of chance in itself.
The original photograph by Cartier-Bresson captures the studio of the artist Henri Matisse in 1944, when he was living and working in Vence, France. This insight into his personal space -the photograph was never published because Matisse thought it to be, in fact, too personal- with his walls covered in tapestries and unfinished work, anchors the notion that, when it comes to the production of value, nothing can bring volatility into the core of art’s ancient search for meaning. It is in the long-standing relationships to artists that the bet is placed.
